A Novel Reliability Optimization Framework Based on Whale Optimization Algorithm for Multi-Component Systems: A Review

Abstract
The reliability optimization of multi-component systems remains a complex challenge in engineering, given the nonlinear, multi-modal, and highly constrained nature of real-world applications. Traditional mathematical programming approaches often fail to effectively handle the intricacies of modern systems, especially when practical constraints and large-scale configurations are involved. Metaheuristic algorithms have thus become increasingly vital, with the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) emerging as a promising nature-inspired solution due to its unique search dynamics and adaptability. This review synthesizes the latest advancements in WOA-based reliability optimization frameworks for multi-component systems, examining the evolution of metaheuristic approaches, benchmarking results, and practical constraints integration. Key research gaps, including tailored constraint handling, hybridization, parameter tuning, and real-world applicability, are discussed, highlighting future directions for both theoretical and applied research in reliability engineering.
